The Golden Boot!

As the 2014 Fifa football World Cup spectacle came to an end today, we were once again reminded of Anuj. We all know of Anuj’s love for sports in general but few might be aware that Anuj infact played soccer for his high school. He often frustrated forwards from all over playing as the goalie and blocking their shots and keeping the ball away from the back of the net. He however not only loved playing the sport but also enjoyed it as a spectator especially when it came to the World Cup.
A quick story: Back in 1994 when the World Cup was hosted by United States, Anuj remained glued to the TV screens watching every match despite the fact that they were on in the middle of the night in India. Due to his dedication to the games, he tracked various tallies of goals and blocks etc. This came in handy for a completion being run by the local TV stations where viewers were asked to submit the name of the expected Golden Boot winner. Anuj not only successfully submitted the names of Russian Oleg Salenko & Bulgaria’s Hristo Stoichkov, he went on to win the lucky draw and had the opportunity to accept his prize live on TV. Unfortunately, the same day he came down with the flu and was unable to do so, but his love and passion for the game shined through never the less.
And as ever, despite the disappointment of not being able to make it, Anuj never let go of the smile that he always carried. Play On!
