Super Bowl Party

Today as families around the country gather to root for their team to take home the Vince Lombardi trophy, I’m reminded of sharing the excitement of Super Bowl XXXIX with Anuj in 2005. Neal and I hosted a pizza party. Anuj had another gathering to attend, but never one to disappoint, he arrived at our home, shuffling in with a baseball cap and his amiable spirit. He joined us for a slice of pizza and a beer. When pushed, he admitted that while he enjoyed football, it couldn’t hold a candle to his beloved baseball.

I can’t remember which teams played, who won, or who performed at the halftime show, but what is permanently etched in my memory is spending time with our dear Anuj, his easy going disposition, the dimpled smile that lit up his face and every room he entered, and the way he always found time to share a few precious moments with his family.

Anuj throwing a football around with friends. He had an incredible arm and could gun a tight, accurate spiral no matter how long the pass.

I remember on one of his trips to India over summer break, Andy was trying to introduce ultimate Frisbee and American football to me, and though I was pretty familiar with the games, he was super excited on trying his arm out as he had just spent the past semester playing flag football for his fraternity. And as usual, Anuj being the encouraging type, all throughout the summer, he kept telling me that I have huge hands and that I would make a great receiver and that I should give it a shot when I go to college. AAhhh! good old memories, on this Super Bowl Weekend. Miss you.

We just saw your e-mail in India and were totally shocked and stunned to learn about Dear Aditya. We can only hope and pray that you,Hema Neel, and Kapil are somehow able to cope with this. God has definitely not been kind to you. Dear Anuj's loss was perhaps too much to bear for Aditya. We have lost a very beloved friend whom we are going to miss dearly. We will call you as soon as possible. In the meantime please be brave for the sake of the family.
